Day of Love and Affection

14th February every year Valentine's Day is a celebration day with one single aim to commemorate love and affection. Though it has become more popular as an all-romantic couples' day, it encompasses friendship, family, and loving oneself. The day is all about acts of love, gifts of love, and celebration of relationship in a wider aspect.

History of Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day history began in ancient Rome, where mid-February was the Lupercalia festival to celebrate the arrival of spring. The festival became more developed, and by the 5th century, Pope Gelasius declared February 14th St. Valentine's Day in honor of the life of St. Valentine, a Roman priest, who was convicted of marrying women and soldiers secretly against the emperor. His valiancy and kindness made him a lover and admirer of love and devotion.

Why We Celebrate Valentine's Day?

Valentine's Day has become a global tradition that truly does not pay attention to culture or origin. It is the day when we are reminded to love and care for those who fill our worlds with love and happiness. While economic considerations such as chocolates, flowers, and greeting cards have become the defining features of Valentine's Day, Valentine's Day is all about showing love, kindness, and appreciation.

How to Show Affection on Valentine's Day

It is not always a costly relationship. Personal, home-made gifts like a homemade craft, goods with monogramming, or passion letters are thoughtful. Spending quality time with the love one in the form of date night, weekend getaway, or couch night at home re-establishes ties. Activities like breakfast in bed or household chores convey love and care. Well said in person, in the words of a kind note, or a thoughtful text message convey more than a thousand words. Surprising activities like an unexpected outing, a thoughtful video call, or a thoughtful scavenger hunt give a dash of delight and joy. Valentine's Day can also be used to give oneself some love, i.e., a spa day, a homemade meal, or a list of things that put one in a good mood.

Valentine's Day is a day of love, but not necessarily a day of romantic love as such. It is a day of celebration of love in general. Irrespective of the magnitude of an act or a romantic happening, the capability to express love will make humans happy and solidify relationships between people. Valentine's Day actually reminds us that love in any shape or size is an active ingredient which lends heat and meaning to a person.

Globally, an estimated one in three women experience physical, sexual, or emotional violence in their lifetime. In the Philippines, data from the 2022 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) by the Philippine Statistics Authority reveals that nearly one out of five women have suffered violence from their current or most recent partner. This alarming figure underscores the urgent need for stronger legal frameworks, community awareness, and sustained advocacy. To address this, the Philippines has enacted laws like the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004 (RA 9262)and observes the 18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women annually. A Glimpse Into My World: Joyfull Journey

Holaaa, I'm Alexah Joy, a 15-year-old girl from the charming city of Vigan. I was born on January 3, 2009, and I am the eldest daughter in my family. Being the firstborn has shaped me in many ways, especially in how I relate to my family.                                                               I’m often considered a daddy’s girl, but at the same time, I’m very independent. I’ve learned to balance these two sides of me as I navigate through life. -- Question, how I balance these two? Well, by Communicating more often with my papa, setting a boundary that can help me to maintain my independence while still allowing for a close relationship with my papa, taking responsibility that can also help me to feel more in control and independent, and lastly, I had to practice self-reflection on my feelings and needs. Let's move...
